Plant: | Ylang Ylang is a tall tropical tree, reaching 30 meters (100 feet) in height. The bark of this tree is smooth with small ¡¥cracks¡¦ in the surface, the branches drooping towards the earth, similar to a willow. The Ylang Ylang tree has constant flowers that are fragile, appearing first as green, then pink, mauve or yellow, with the later considered the best for essential oil production. Once the flowers have died they are replaced with a heavily seed green coloured fruit. |
Oil: |
This clear oil is created though the distillation of the fresh flowers, and is a process that must be completed quickly in order to keep the flowers from drying out. The numerical reference given to the oil is an indication of quality. There are four levels that Ylang Ylang oil is produced at. The grades are referred to as extra, first, second and third. The first portion of the oil is collected after a number of hours, and is called Ylang Ylang Extra. This is the highest grade oil and is used in perfumery for the most part. The first, second and third are collected over different time periods, the distillation process stopped each time. |
Scent: | Exotic, sweet and lingering. |
