Plant: | Sandalwood is a small evergreen tree growing up to 9 meters in height (reaching up to 24,000 meters in the Indian mountains, outside of cultivation). This tree is parasitic, burrowing its roots into nearby trees to gain sustenance for the first seven years, leaving the other to die. To produce oil this tree must be over 30 years old, preferably around 40-50 years when it has reached its oil production peak. |
Oil: |
Sandalwood oil begins as pale yellow oil, changing to a deeper brown- yellow with maturity. In fact the oil is stored for 6 months after distillation to achieve a higher quality of aroma. |
Scent: | Sweet, exotic and lingering without the bitter top note found in the Australian variety. |
